Fishing vessels and their gear present an enormous opportunity to collect valuable information, not just on fishing operations, but of the marine environment they operate in. Technology developments are helping to launch the fishing industry further into the global blue economy and hold huge promise for increasing our understanding of ocean ecosystems and how humans interact with them, increasing economic benefits for fishermen and furnishing the knowledge needed by managers to ensure that the flow of benefits that the oceans provide are sustained for future generations. This conference session will provide an overview of the latest technological implementations in this space as well as the current barriers to implementation.
