About this event:

Data and traceability are an essential tool for sourcing seafood that is both environmentally and socially responsible. Comprehensive traceability programs include ecological, social, and economic data related to seafood products, allowing governments to strengthen the effectiveness of fisheries management, support legal and equitable human welfare conditions for seafood laborers, and identify and prevent illegal and mislabeled products from entering domestic and international markets.

Creating a comprehensive seafood traceability program means it takes advantage of the triple bottom line benefits – ecological, social, and economic for small-scale fishers gaining access to market and industrial fleets alike.

In the past five years, the SALT team has brought people together worldwide to share learnings, create opportunities, break down barriers, and build a new narrative that demonstrates the many ecological, social, and economic benefits of implementing traceability systems. One of SALT’s most notable achievements was developing the Comprehensive Principles and Pathway, last year. The Principles were created in collaboration with 35 stakeholders from 18 countries to help support governments to initiate, design, and implement comprehensive traceability programs. SALT’s focus is now applying these innovative tools with partners in strategic seafood producing regions including Latin America and Caribbean countries, Vietnam, and Tanzania.

This session will have panel presentations to share information and breakout sessions to solicit feedback on challenges and solutions.  The panel will share more information about the work with governments applying the traceability principles and solicit information from participants about their needs and successes in seafood traceability. Speakers will include SALT staff, representatives from the Ministry Livestock and Fisheries in Tanzania, and a US government representative.
