FishWise works to sustain ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global seafood supply chains. FishWise implements a holistic approach to sustainability by advancing private sector leadership, building and actively participating in multi-stakeholder collaborations, and strengthening governance reform and policy advocacy. For over 20 years, FishWise has developed, tested, and implemented responsible business practices to improve the transparency and sustainable management of complex global seafood supply chains and serves as a bridge between the private sector, governments, environmental sustainability, counter-IUU fishing, and social responsibility communities. Our retailer partnerships reach 4,940 grocery stores across the U.S. and 450 seafood suppliers worldwide.
Our advocacy efforts have resulted in improvements to seafood import regulations, such as the U.S. Seafood Import Monitoring Program, joint calls from major corporations to strengthen international fisheries management, and the global expansion of FishWise’s traceability initiatives beyond the United States and into Tanzania, Vietnam, Mexico, and Peru.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the world’s leading conservation organization committed to conserving nature and reducing the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth. WWF works in nearly 100 countries and collaborates with people to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and the places in which they live.
At WWF, we believe that healthy oceans benefit the planet, people, prosperity, and peace. We must protect, restore, and nurture them for nature and communities worldwide. We take a place-based and whole-systems approach to move the world’s oceans toward a nature-positive future by engaging across scales and sectors and using science as our guide.
WWF has been working to combat IUU fishing for over 20 years and has been working directly to establish stronger requirements in the U.S. to prevent the entry of illegal fish for the past 10 years. WWF’s research, advocacy, and partnerships were key to establishing the first U.S. Task Force to address IUU fishing and the subsequent establishment of the NOAA Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP).
