A Collaborative Approach to Policy Advocacy
Navigating the complexities of seafood supply chains is no small feat. To address these challenges, FishWise and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)—with generous support from the Walton Family Foundation—have created this policy advocacy resource hub. By promoting effective policies and management practices, we aim to foster transparent and responsible supply chains that protect our oceans and ensure the sustainability of seafood for future generations.
Using this toolkit, FishWise and WWF aim to help the seafood industry recognize its role in advocating for strong regulations while simultaneously integrating these efforts into its mission and daily operations.
A cornerstone of this initiative is collaboration. Through interactive forums and feedback sessions with industry experts and U.S. government representatives, we have tailored these resources to address the real-world needs of the seafood community. Additionally, our global partnerships strengthen this effort, as we work with international coalitions to develop joint action plans and recommendations for more effective seafood regulations.
Why Seafood Companies Need to Advocate
The seafood industry is vital to the global economy, providing essential protein and livelihoods for millions. However, it faces growing risks, including overfishing, environmental degradation, and labor exploitation. Even where fisheries management exists, poor enforcement or inadequate policies can force responsible companies to compete with illegally harvested or fraudulent products, undermining both ethical business practices and market stability.
With their deep understanding of supply chains and data management, seafood companies are uniquely positioned to identify gaps, drive governance reform, and advocate for stronger regulatory frameworks. By engaging in policy advocacy, companies can help ensure fair competition, protect workers, and strengthen consumer confidence in their products.
While business-led advocacy is not new, its focus has evolved. Traditionally centered on environmental sustainability, today’s advocacy efforts emphasize combatting IUU fishing, improving vessel transparency, and strengthening corporate due diligence. By leveraging their expertise and influence, seafood businesses can help shape regulations that create a more sustainable, ethical, and economically viable industry.
