Organization Description:

The Andhra Pradesh Labour Department is a state government body responsible for implementing central and state labor laws, safeguarding workers’ rights, and ensuring safe, fair workplaces across the state. It administers registration and licensing of establishments under the Factories Act, Contract Labour Act, and Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act; conducts inspections; resolves industrial disputes; and enforces minimum wages, working hours, and occupational safety standards. Through its district offices and helplines, the department also supports migrant workers and women in informal sectors.

Role in Indian Shrimp Aquaculture: Shrimp processing plants, peeling sheds, hatcheries, and feed mills across Andhra Pradesh employ large numbers of women and migrant workers, many under informal or contract arrangements. The AP Labour Department licenses these establishments, inspects working conditions, enforces minimum wages and overtime rules, and handles complaints of wage theft, trafficking, or unsafe conditions. It is therefore a critical counterpart for any supply-chain due diligence, remediation, or worker-voice initiative targeting labor conditions in India's shrimp export industry.
