Organization Description:

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. FSSAI develops science-based standards for articles of food, regulates the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food, and licenses food businesses. Through its regulations on food additives, contaminants, labeling, and packaging, and its inspection and enforcement apparatus, FSSAI works to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food across India.

Role in Indian Shrimp Aquaculture: FSSAI sets food-safety standards for shrimp and other seafood sold domestically in India, including limits on antibiotic residues, heavy metals, and microbiological contaminants, and rules on labeling and processing. As India's domestic shrimp market grows alongside exports, FSSAI regulation is increasingly important for processors, retailers, and restaurants. FSSAI coordinates with MPEDA, CAA, and licensed processors on food-safety compliance, making it a key regulator for both consumer protection and trust in Indian shrimp products.
