GENDER AND FOOD LOSS IN SUSTAINABLE FISH VALUE CHAINS IN AFRICA

Food and Aquaculture Organization (FAO)
2022
Screenshot of Report Cover

Food loss and waste occur in most, if not all, fisheries supply chains. Gender considerations play an essential role in all aspects of fisheries management and may influence food loss. However, in many cases, there is limited or non-existent gender-sensitivity considerations in fisheries management.

This paper interprets critical elements of the FAO Guiding Note in the context of African small-scale fisheries and incorporates the concepts developed in Towards gender-equitable small-scale fisheries governance and development – A handbook. In support of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Small-Scale Sustainable Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (FAO, 2017b).
