The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program provides science-based recommendations through its consumer guides, website, and app to help raise public awareness about sustainable seafood issues. U.S. seafood buyers, distributors, retailers and chefs also rely on Seafood Watch to guide purchasing, which advances sustainable fishing and aquaculture operations and incentivizes others to improve. Seafood Watch works with governments, international colleagues, and regional fisheries management organizations as part of an ongoing effort to address international supply chain issues, such as traceability, human rights abuses, and IUU fishing.

Social Responsibility: The Seafood Watch program is collaborating with Seafish and Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to create a risk assessment tool for social responsibility in fisheries. The tool will focus on the “at sea” portion of wild-caught seafood supply chains. The tool produces risk ratings by drawing on publicly available and verifiable evidence from multiple sources, including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Labor Department, the U.N. International Labour Organization, national labour rights reports and credible media reports. Along with an overall human rights rating, the tool provides an overview that summarises the potential risks associated with a fishery.
