FishWise at Oysterfest 2012
This past Saturday, FishWise attended the 4th annual Oysterfest at the Waterbar Restaurant in San Francisco. A benefit for the San Francisco chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, Oysterfest hosted booths from a variety of Oyster farms, local restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Committed to sustainability, the Waterbar features a full oyster bar and serves Green and Yellow ranked species, all of which have country of origin and catch method listed on the menu. Set against the glorious background of the Embarcadero waterfront, the fun-filled event featured live music, a charity auction, and several entertaining competitions including a shucking/platter arranging contest as well as a hot-sauce contest. Another of the day’s highlights was the oyster-eating contest — won by a fellow who downed 90 oysters in 4 minutes! The FishWise booth was a popular destination for festival patrons, who were interested in learning about seafood sustainability and the services FishWise provides to our retailer partners such as Bi-Rite Market (one of the event’s sponsors!) After the event ended, volunteers, restaurant staff, and oyster farmers were treated to a fantastic dinner and discussion session. Our own Ashley Greenley gave a presentation on FishWise to the enthusiastic group, followed by representatives from Drakes Bay Oysters, the Hama Hama Oyster Farm, and the Surfrider Foundation. FishWise would like to thank the Waterbar, and particularly executive chef Parke Ulrich, for the invitation to partake in such a great day focused on sustainability and ocean health — we look forward to Oysterfest 2013!
