Our Current Major Initiatives

Increased transparency in seafood production and governance: FishWise works to catalyze transparent, legal, traceable seafood production. We consult businesses and champion global efforts for government adoption of verification and traceability best practices.
Establish Human Rights Due Diligence as a standard practice: In partnership with Conservation International and LRQA, FishWise has formed the Consortium for Social Risks in Seafood. Together we are developing actionable Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) guidance and tools.
Transforming data into actionable intelligence: FishWise prioritizes practical, actionable data analytics. In partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we’re enhancing our efficacy in detecting human and labor rights risks in seafood supply chains.
Moving stakeholders from analysis to action: FishWise is driving seafood stakeholders to action in high-risk areas. We elevate best practices, promote shared understanding, and encourage collaborative responses in critical zones.

Objective Directors

Jenny Barker, M.P.A

Executive Director

Jenny Barker is the Executive Director of FishWise. She accepted the position in early 2023 after working with the organization for five years, previously serving as the Chief of Party for the SALT, a global public-private initiative.

Jenny has a long-held passion for working to support global populations and preserving our ocean utilizing holistic sustainability. She has more than two decades of experience in the public and private sector managing international programs, 11 of those doing fisheries work on three continents. Leading efforts like SALT and the USAID-funded Global FISH Alliance, she leads by bringing diverse stakeholders together (government, industry, fishers, and NGOs) to identify the best solutions to address issues affecting the ocean. For example, Jenny has implemented participatory approaches to fisheries management and traceability in Honduras, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Cambod

Sara Lewis, M.A., M.E.S.

Director of Programs

Sara develops and directs projects aimed at scaling and implementing transparency, traceability, and counter-IUU best practices within supply chains and government policies.

Sara and her team lead FishWise’s efforts defining and implementing transparency, traceability, and counter-IUU best practices within supply chains and global collaborations. Sara also directs FishWise’s work relating to key U.S. and international policies, and has published peer reviewed papers and reports on traceability and social responsibility in seafood. Sara holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and two masters degrees in environmental studies from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and UCSC respectively. Outside of work Sara is an avid traveler, who loves hiking, comedy, and SCUBA diving.

As a Senior Project Director, Michelle leads our partnership with Albertsons Companies (2200+ stores nationwide), which covers fresh and frozen, sushi, and shelf-stable seafood.

As a Senior Project Director, Michelle leads our partnership with Albertsons Companies (2200+ stores nationwide), which covers fresh and frozen, sushi, and shelf-stable seafood. Michelle works to advance environmental, social, and traceability improvements in seafood supply chains through FishWise’s partnerships. Prior to FishWise, Michelle worked for MRAG Americas as an MSC CoC auditor and for New Zealand’s Ministry of Fisheries and Ministry for Primary Industries, within their respective fisheries science and fisheries management teams. Senior Project Manager

As Senior Project Manager, An works across FishWise’s business partnerships to advance companies’ environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and traceability goals.

She oversees Albertsons Companies’ Responsible Sushi Program, works cross-functionally with FishWise’s Social Responsibility team, and serves as Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. An leverages her background in environmental policy, research, stakeholder engagement, and communications to drive solutions at the intersection of people An holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies with minors in Spatial Studies and Art & Technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Jessie Zupcic, M.S.

Project Director

Jessie leads our partnership with Albertsons Companies, helping them to build a sustainable seafood program across their 2200 retail locations and supply chains. With over six years in our Business Engagement division and a background in ocean sciences, Jessie bridges the gap between analytical science and the corporate world by creating pragmatic recommendations for our partners to act on. In addition, Jessie serves as Chair of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, helping FishWise improve internal practices and policies. <span style="fo

Garrett Okrasinski, M.A.

Project Director

As a project director, Garrett supports FishWise partners in implementing due diligence and works with industry collaborations to create alignment and guidance for the sector.

As Project Director, Garrett researches and develops guidance and tools for the industry to improve seafood supply chains. Garrett supports industry partners and collaborations to drive improvements and implement ongoing human rights due diligence. She focuses on improving daily business practices to support workers throughout supply chains. Garrett earned her undergraduate degree in International Studies from the University of San Francisco, focusing on peace and conflict. After working in global health and social impact, she earned her master’s in International Studies from the University of Washington, where she focused on resource security.

Social Responsibility Director

Kelley leads social responsibility efforts, advising companies and collaborating across the sector to build resilient supply chains that uphold international labor standards.

Kelley and her team lead the FishWise strategy and efforts in social responsibility, advising companies and collaborating across the sector to build resilient supply chains that uphold international human and labor rights. She is always looking for practical steps companies can take to integrate responsible practices and purpose into core operations. Kelley is also excited to drive the organization’s collaboration strategy, which allows FishWise to work with industry, government and NGOs to innovate and implement solutions for the sector. Nahla Gedeon Achi, M.A.

Senior Project Manager

As Senior Project Manager, Nahla develops guidance for industry to implement human rights due diligence and promote decent work in the seafood sector.

As Senior Project Manager, Nahla develops guidance to promote decent work in the seafood sector. Before joining FishWise, Nahla worked at the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions on marine resource conflicts and labor issues in tuna supply chains. Her interest in human rights started while studying International Relations and Human Rights, with a focus on understanding how industries with complex supply chains address labor issues. She pursued an M.A. in Earth Systems to explore the intersection of human rights and environmental issues and equip herself to work in the seafood space, where sustainability and social responsibility are often interlinked.

Ashley Peiffer, M.S., CAPM

Senior Project Manager

As Senior Project Manager, Ashley supports the Social Responsibility Division with a diverse scope of work and multi-pronged approach to advancing human rights in seafood supply chains.

As Senior Project Manager, Ashley advances social responsibility projects, empowering teams to meet project goals while providing technical expertise on human and labor rights in the seafood sector. Ashley is a Certified Associate Project Manager through the Project Management Institute. She earned her B.S. in Marine-Science Biology from the University of Tampa and her M.S. in Marine Resource Management from Oregon State University. Ashley’s expertise is informed by years of leadership in local, regional, and national-level community engagement programs. At FishWise, Ashley co-chairs the Organizational Culture & Values Committee.

Nina Rosen, M.A.S.

Project Director

Nina manages projects that lie at the intersection of seafood supply chain traceability, verification, and transparency to combat illegal fishing and inform decision making.

Nina is a connector–connecting efforts of the global seafood movement to due diligence efforts of discrete companies by focusing on multi-stakeholder engagement to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated catch from entering the market. By sharing traceability solutions and guidelines, Nina’s work often lies at intersections of communication, fisheries, and coordination. Nina’s interdisciplinary background and work with small-scale fisheries allow her to view seafood security through an environmental, economic, and social lens. Nina holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Alyssa Withrow, MENV

Project Manager

Alyssa creates innovative seafood traceability and anti-IUU solutions, fostering global collaboration for sustainable oceans.

As Project Manager, Alyssa drives Traceability Division research and work plan execution to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Her global collaborations yield innovative traceability and anti-IUU solutions for the seafood industry. Holding a B.S. in Integrated Science and Technology from James Madison University and a MENV in environmental and natural resource policy from the University of Colorado Boulder, Alyssa's past work spans Southern Ocean marine protected areas, Tanzanian illegal fishing studies, and the intersection of IUU fishing and U.S. national security.
