Seafood is among the most globally traded food commodities, with seafood supply chains often extremely complex and intentionally opaque. Driven by a lack of transparency and oversight, illegal fishing is devastating many regions of the oceans and human and labor rights abuses are inextricably linked to popular seafood products such as tuna and shrimp. Given the systemic nature of the problem, illegal fishing and human and labor rights abuses can and must be addressed through a multi-faceted approach that includes advocacy, market incentives, and utilizing transparency to foster greater accountability in both the public and private sectors.
Operating at the intersection of business interests, ocean conservation, and human rights, FishWise is uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge between the private sector, government, and civil society, where FishWise drives alignment and collective action on critical challenges in the seafood industry. For over 20 years, FishWise has partnered with major corporations to develop, test, implement, and broadcast responsible business practices to advance private sector accountability and oversight in seafood supply chains. Our 2023 FishWise Impact Report reflects on our accomplishments over these past two decades and also where we intend to grow our impact as an organization.
