Next-Generation Sustainability Guidance for Seafood Businesses

April 05, 2016

The Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions released an updated version of the Common Vision for Sustainable Seafood at Seafood Expo North America in Boston. FishWise is proud to be a member of the Conservation Alliance working collectively with our colleagues to help businesses overcome challenges to seafood sustainability.

Businesses have a critical role to play in protecting the health of our oceans while ensuring the long-term viability of their seafood supply. Since 2008, the Common Vision has provided a path businesses can take to move toward that goal. Today, the Common Vision helps businesses representing 80 percent of the North American grocery and institutional food service markets make and deliver on sustainability commitments. That includes commitments by FishWise partners Albertsons, Target, and Hy-Vee.

The updated Common Vision reflects industry progress and changes in the sustainable seafood landscape during the past eight years, including recommendations to:

  • Address social issues like human rights violations and labor exploitation,
  • Verify sustainability by tracing products back through the supply chain, and
  • Require transparency and progress from fishery and aquaculture improvement projects.

“The Common Vision has been an invaluable guide for the seafood industry’s sustainability leaders,” said Tobias Aguirre. “New guidance on cutting-edge issues like human rights and traceability makes the Common Vision more relevant today than ever.”
